Sample Itinerary: Basque culinary tour: San Sebastian plus the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao

Day 1

  • Arrival, rental car pick-up, and check-in. We’ll provide you with details on getting to your hotel.
  • Your guide meets you for a stroll at Chillida Leku, the16th century farmhouse and sculpture garden.
  • A guided walk along Donostia’s pretty Belle Epoque boulevards, through the narrow streets of the Parte Vieja, and including a stop at La Bretxa market.
  • Lunch: discover Basque pintxos on a tapas tour.
Afternoon free time – stroll the beach or sit in a café along La Concha, ride the funicular for a view from Monte Igueldo, shop, relax.
  • Dinner on your own, with suggestions on everything from rustic sidrerías to homey local cooking clubs or gastronomic societies to Michelin stars (we’ll help with reserving, as needed).

Day 2

  • Set out for Bilbao and the Guggenheim in your rental car – we’ll provide you with the best route.
  • Take a personalized guided stroll past Bilbao’s highlights and zip to the museum along the Ría de Bilbao in the nifty Eusko-tram.
  • You’ll have advance tickets to the museum, as well as an introduction to the space and significant exhibited works from your guide.
  • Lunch at a Caserío (popular Basque country grill) overlooking Bilbao, or at a traditional spot in the Casco Viejo (old city) if you prefer.
  • Make a leisurely return to Donostia, stopping for coffee and a stroll in a fishing port on the coast.
  • Dinner on your own, again with our suggestions and help booking if needed.

Day 2

  • Breakfast and checkout, rental car return, and departure.
  • If your departure for onward travel is not until later in the day, we’re happy to provide additional sightseeing and restaurant suggestions.
